Hi friends! A few months ago I had my first microblading experience. To be fully candid, I was actually never interested in getting my eyebrows microbladed until I discovered Jessica Muro on Instagram.
Rewind a little bit – what is microblading? Technically it’s a tattooing method that uses a tool with several tiny needles, that adds in semi-permanent pigment into your skin. Microblading helps shape your face symmetrically, gives the appearance of fuller brows, and allows your brows to look more natural and filled without makeup.
OK, now that you know what the technical method is, let’s dive in deeper!
Pre Appointment
As I mentioned, I was never fully interested in getting my eye brows microbladed until finding Jessica Muro on Instagram. For months I looked at her work and knew she was the only person I would allow to microblade my brows. You guys… I cannot stress how important it is to do your homework before allowing someone to tattoo your face! I’d assume you would do your research if someone was doing a traditional tattoo on your body, so please, do your homework and find the best person in your area!
Once I had finally connected with Jessica, I immediately made my appointment with zero hesitation and couldn’t wait to get going!
My First Appointment
When I arrived to Jessica’s studio (which by the way is SO cute), she greeted me with the sweetest smile and I already felt like I was in good hands. She asked if I was nervous, and my answer was “should I be?” I totally wasn’t nervous and I had full faith in her (her portfolio speaks for itself) and I’m glad I did. You should NEVER go to a permanent makeup appointment with hesitation. Always trust your artist, and if you have doubt, don’t book the appointment!
We did a quick consult (I mostly just told her what I like about my browns and had full faith in her skill set). I was on the chair within 5 minutes, and Jessica was measuring and drawing on my face to get me ready for microblading.
As it turns out, my brows are actually uneven naturally! My hair grows lower on the right side of my face than the left side. Jessica said this is totally normal, as our faces are asymmetrical. I was comfortable with her making the adjustment and knowing my face would now be more symmetrical. Looking back a few months later, and I swear my eyes look more awake! The entire drawing process took about 20 minutes or so.
Once I saw and approved the brow outline, Jessica put numbing cream on for about 10 minutes and showed me the color she was thinking for my browns by putting the ink on her hand and on my face next to my brows.
Total honesty: I couldn’t freaking tell if it would match! I trusted that she knew it would and just went with it (and I’m so glad I did, because they are a perfect match to my hair!).
Once I gave her the green light on color, she cleaned off the numbing cream and we got to microblading! When she started, I actually asked if she was trimming my brows (HAHA). She was like “NO girl, we’re microblading!” I actually didn’t feel a thing at first.
PSA: Everyone has a completely different experience with how the process feels. My friend Makenna also went to Jessica Muro, and felt absolutely nothing the entire time.
Jessica made small strokes (so they appear like small eye brow hairs) between my brow hairs from the center of my face to the end of my brows and went over each side about four times to ensure complete coverage.
During the second round, I totally started to feel it. The pain wasn’t unbearable, but it wasn’t comfortable (if that makes sense). Jessica is literally the BEST, she straight up took 5 more minutes to re-numb my brows, so that there was little to no pain. Like I said, every single person experiences something totally different. Jessica said everyone finishes, and no one has gotten up and left without perfectly microbladed brows!
The entire process of microblading was really only about 20 minutes! She was super speedy, but precise. When she gave me a mirror I almost didn’t want to get up! I was SO excited, I couldn’t stop staring at my new beautiful brows!
Once they were done, she thoroughly walked me through the after care process and what to expect. She actually gave me the cutest flier plus the brow cream for my after care. It was super helpful!
The Results
Day 0 – I had little to no pain after leaving. I did experience a small amount of stinging, which was gone after a few hours.
I went straight to Target to pick up water wipes (she pointed me to the baby section and they’re $2.99). Water wipes are used hourly on day 1 to prevent dryness and flaking.
Day 1 (The Day After)
I woke up feeling great! I used the water wipes and washed my face in the morning to clean them up, followed by the gel. Noticeably the brows do look a little darker on day 1, but nothing major. They are just healing!
Days 2, 3, 4 – mostly same as day 1. I had literally no flaking and or dryness. Simply using the brow gel twice a day for the next ten days, and keeping them clean (no workouts for the first few days).
Day 5 & 6 – I had a small amount of flaking. Basically it’s like a scab, and it’s just dead skin falling off but not much minimal and it was pretty unnoticeable unless you stare
Day 7 – The flaking is over, and color appears much lighter
Day 10 – Day 10 was the last day of using ointment. They appeared noticeably lighter and perfectly matches my brows.
Six Week Fill
After six weeks, Jessica schedules a touch up fill. This appointment was a little quicker and super easy. All she’s doing is filling in empty spots and going back over the ones she already did. Tehre’s no measuring this time around, since the outline is complete from appointment 1.
This appointment was super easy, and I asked her to fill in my brows a little bit more (while keeping them natural). She basically did a bit more shading and used a different needle to do so, in addition to filling in my original strokes. She explained it’s the purpose is to not over fill, but to fill the previous strokes and also microblade any bald spots (YES I have quite a few from over plucking at such a young age).
There’s some slight discomfort, after all it is a blade she’s using (hence microBLADE), but she numbed my brows twice, so I didn’t have much pain.
Like I said before, for me it honestly feels like nothing at first, but when the numbing starts to wear off, it’s equivalent to someone just scratching your skin. Really no big deal and from what she said everyone has different experiences in what they’re feeing during the process.
After the touch up, I noticed that my brows were much more dry than the first round.Rather than waiting for a scab, all I did was keep my skin extremely moisturized for the week! Once again, I used water wipes and ointment after this apointment. I experienced zero pain or discomfort. I did have minimal flaking on day 3, which was not very noticeable.
Final Thoughts
I cannot recommend Jessica Muro more! She was so wonderful to work with and I really love how my brows turned out. I’m actually kind of sad that I only get to see her once a year for fills, because I just love her!
